How does a fallopian tube blockage result in female infertility?

What Are Blocked Fallopian Tubes?

The mature egg travels from the ovaries to the uterus through two thin tubes known as the fallopian tubes.

A blocked fallopian tube is a common cause of infertility. They result when scarring, adhesions, or infections prevent the egg from traveling.

For fertilization, sperm and eggs meet in the fallopian tube. When a tube is blocked, it prevents them from joining.

Causes of blocked fallopian tubes

Fallopian tubes are usually blocked by scar tissue or pelvic adhesions. These can be caused by many factors, including:

01

Pelvic inflammatory disease

It is an infection that occurs in the pelvic area and results in scarring or hydrosalpinx.

02

Sexually transmitted diseases

Scarring and pelvic inflammatory disease are possible effects of chlamydia and gonorrhoea.

03

Endometriosis

endometrial tissue on the outside of other organs might result in adhesions that block the fallopian tubes.

04

Ectopic pregnancy

Scarring can result from any prior ectopic pregnancy (in which the fetus develops in a fallopian tube).

Next

05

Fibroids

These growths can block the fallopian tube, especially where they connect to the uterus.

06

Past abdominal surgery

Previous surgery, particularly on the fallopian tubes, might result in pelvic adhesions that block the tubes.
